چکیده

In an investigation of the activity against Bacillus subtilis spores of various mixtures of alcohol and sodium hypochlorite 50% methanol with enough hypochlorite to provide 2000 parts per million available chlorine water was the most sporicidal. This mixture, both when freshly prepared and for at least eight hours after mixing, achieved a five-log reduction in spore count in 10 minutes. The sporicidal activity of mixtures containing the same initial level of available chlorine was found to vary with the alcohol, initial alcohol concentration, and age of the mixture. Such mixtures may be useful for disinfecting heat-sensitive instruments.

Effect of pH on sporicidal and microbicidal activity of buffered mixtures of alcohol and sodium hypochlorite.

The effect of pH on the activity of buffered sodium hypochlorite solution, and a buffered methanol/sodium hypochlorite mixture, against Bacillus subtilis spores was investigated. The best results, considering both sporicidal activity and stability, were achieved in the pH range 7.6--8.1. The sporicidal activity and stability of five alcohol/hypochlorite mixtures, each containing a different alc...

Sporicidal activity of hospital disinfectants.

The sporicidal activity of hospital disinfectants was tested using two methods of test and two species of spores. Alcoholic hypochlorite and glutaraldehyde (Cidex) showed some sporicidal activity; the first was the more effective. Iodophors, formalin, and phenolics were less effective, in descending order. Chlorhexidine showed no activity.A freshly prepared solution containing 50% methanol and ...

Impact of standard test protocols on sporicidal efficacy.

BACKGROUND There has been an increase in the availability of commercial sporicidal formulations. Any comparison of sporicidal data from the literature is hampered by the number of different standard tests available and the use of diverse test conditions including bacterial strains and endospore preparation. AIM To evaluate the effect of sporicidal standard tests on the apparent activity of ei...

Disinfection methods for spores of Bacillus atrophaeus, B. anthracis, Clostridium tetani, C. botulinum and C. difficile.

To evaluate disinfection methods for environments contaminated with bioterrorism-associated microorganism (Bacillus anthracis), we performed the following experiments. First, the sporicidal effects of sodium hypochlorite on spores of five bacterial species were evaluated. Bacillus atrophaeus was the most resistant to hypochlorite, followed in order by B. anthracis, Clostridium botulinum and Clo...

Sporicidal activity of sodium hypochlorite at subzero temperatures.

Sodium hypochlorite was an excellent disinfectant at low temperatures. With the addition of ethylene glycol to prevent freezing, hypochlorite solutions at low free available chlorine concentrations, were effective against Bacillus subtilis var. niger spores from 0 to -40 C. The effectiveness of this decontaminant was influenced by temperature, pH, and concentration, with pH 7.2 the optimum for ...
